On Books and Writing
- Q. How did you come to write When Friendship Hurts?
- A. When I was speaking about friendship because of my book FRIENDSHIFTS: THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP AND HOW IT SHAPES OUR LIVES, listeners would come up to me and in a hushed voice say, "I had a friendship that ended," with obvious regrets and embarrassment. I then asked a list of working Moms that I was on if anyone had ever had a friendship end and if she did, how did it impact on her. A woman wrote to me that when she was a pre-teen of 11, her best friend called her something terrible and it ended their friendship. That woman, who was a successful business woman and who was also happily married and with two children, admitted to me that she had never had a friendship that close again. That how much that friendship ending had frightened and scared her.
Those were just some of the real-life stories that led me to conducting the extensive original research that became the basis of WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS. The book obviously struck a real universal nerve since it's been translated into 17 languages in countries around the world with 5 more translations in preparation. I've received hundreds of emails from readers who have thanked me for writing the book. They share that they thought there was something wrong with them because a friendship didn't work out. The stories I've heard that are especially powerful are from those who had a friendship end and they didn't know why, and their former friend refused to discuss what happened. They find my discussion of that type of situation in WHEN FRIENDSHIP HURTS helps them to heal.
