Jennie Shortridge

Jennie Shortridge has published five novels: Love Water Memory, When She Flew, Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe, Eating Heaven, and Riding with the Queen. When not writing, teaching writing workshops, or volunteering with kids, Jennie stays busy as a founding member of Seattle7Writers.org, a collective of Northwest authors devoted both to raising funds for community literacy projects and to raising awareness of Northwest literature.

Q. What is your motto or maxim?

A. You create your own happy.

Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

A. I'd love to be a talented instrumentalist. I've taken lessons, practiced, all to no avail.

Q. If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your days, what would it be?

A. Vietnamese food.

Q. If you could be any person or thing, who or what would it be?

A. I sometimes wish I could be a smoothie maker in a little shack on a beach, but then I get over it.

Q. With whom in history do you most identify?

A. I don't know about identifying, but my heroes are those who fought for civil rights when I was growing up, whether over race, gender, or other forms of discrimination. Martin Luther King Jr. fills a big place in my soul.

Writers are a bit like gardeners. We plant seeds, lots of seeds, and hope they'll sprout and take hold in the muck that fertilizes such things and helps them grow. Like gardeners, we don’t always succeed. But when we do, and the result of our meticulous tending blooms, it feel miraculous. Especially when we get to watch it flower twice.
