Those Autmn Earmuffs
By Lise Funderburg - February 14, 2013
On the crisp-autumn days that occasionally interrupt the rain here in Philadelphia, I collect evidence of fall. Acorns crunch underfoot, corduroy replaces linen, and the maple at the corner goes high-wattage orange. I see air-conditioners being pulled from windows, spent flower stalks cut back and flopping grasses trussed up. Geese honk from their HOV lanes-on-high, and my neighbor, the retired molecular biologist, dons the fuzzy blue earmuffs she wears as soon as temperatures drop below 60.
