On Books and Writing
- Q. Do you have one sentence of advice for new writers?
- A. There's no magic bullet, no fairy godparent: keep writing and give it your all.
- Q. How did you come to write Matters of the Blood?
- A. I'd started writing a traditional mystery based on a scene I'd imagined: a woman, trapped inside a mortuary prep room. Except, suddenly, one of the draped bodies sat up and started talking to her. Right then, I knew I either had to take it to straight up horror, or something else. I ended up with something else: urban (rural?) fantasy set in a fictional small town in the Texas Hill Country. The basics of the scene remained. The story completely changed.
