On Books and Writing
Q. How did you come to write Hand You're Dealt?
A. The Hand you're Dealt is a book about accepting the death of a loved one, disguised as poker. And a lot of it is about my own father's passing. Also, the main character is named Huck, for both Twain's Huck Finn, and the seventh card in Hold 'em being called "The River." Homestretch is about overcoming prejudice and finding a universal family. And it took me 13 years as a racetrack reporter to set a novel there.
