A. right here in Hancock, NH--but not at my computer!

A. The author Henry Beston. Though I am not nearly as talented as he, his observation that animals are not our brethern and not our underlings, but "other nations" resonates deeply with me.

Q. Which living person do you most admire?

A. Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, who is, to my unending delight, my best friend.

Q. What are your most overused words or phrases?

A. "It's better than a sharp stick in the eye."

Q. What do you regret most?

A. That dogs don't live as long as people

Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

A. flight

A. That nobody I've studied has eaten me yet.

A. Being human. Oh well. Next time....

A. I'm not mean.

Q. If you could be any person or thing, who or what would it be?

A. It would be wonderful to be almost any animal, to see what life feels like from their perspective.

Q. What trait is most noticeable about you?

A. How ill-at-ease I am with people, but how happy and whole I am around animals.

A. Yannan, the paleolithic shaman from Reindeer Moon by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas

Q. Who is your favorite fictional villain?

A. King Kong--I was always rooting for him to win!

Q. If you could meet any historical character, who would it be and what would you say to him or her?

A. Id' like to meet Genghis Khan, to discuss camels.

Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?

A. I am frustrated when people assume animals do not think and feel, which is quite common, or that their thoughts and feelings matter less than our own.

Q. What is your favorite occupation, when you’re not writing?

A. research, which may involve swimming with pink dolphins, dancing with a famous cockatoo, hiking into cloud forests in search of tree kangaroos, or searching for tigers on elephant back.

Q. What’s your fantasy profession?

A. Deep-sea diver

Q. What 3 personal qualities are most important to you?

A. compassion, intelligence and sense of humor

Q. If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your days, what would it be?

A. Dogfood--because it's probably the only single food that could sustain a human for any period of time. Unfortunately it tastes like dogfood. Also, I'm a vegetarian, so this whole scenario isn't coming out well at all!.
