Q. How would you describe your life in only 8 words?

A. writer of books, mother of teenagers = always surprising

Q. What is your motto or maxim?

A. Just do it (oh, hang on, I think someone else might have used that...)

Q. What’s your greatest fear?

A. Something happening to one of my children or to my eyesight - I can't imagine any greater loss than not being able to read.

Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?

A. Getting off the plane somewhere I've never been before, experiencing that thrill of the total unknown

A. "I don't know - what do YOU think?"

Q. What do you regret most?

A. Waiting until the age of 46 to get it together to write a novel

Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

A. Being able to talk to anyone, anywhere - I have a friend who can do that. It's a great gift.

Q. What is your greatest achievement?

A. Writing a novel and having it published in the current climate (sorry kids - I guess you were expecting a mention here...)

A. Worrying about what other people think

A. Worrying about what other people think

Q. If you could be any person or thing, who or what would it be?

A. Jennifer Egan or Anne Enright or Ann Patchett because they get to look in the mirror and say 'damn, I write some fine books'

Q. What trait is most noticeable about you?

A. I can't make a decision to save my life

Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?

A. Yossarian from Catch 22, because he's so funny but at the same time so articulate about the insanity of war

Q. Who is your favorite fictional villain?

A. Iago from Othello - he's such an unashamedly nasty piece of work!

Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?

A. People who give one star Amazon reviews because the book took too long to arrive, or the cat sat on the Kindle or they never got around to reading it because they didn't like the cover.

Q. What is your favorite occupation, when you’re not writing?

A. People watching, preferably with a large glass of wine

Q. What’s your fantasy profession?

A. Being Jon Hamm's PA - wait a minute, that one might actually exist. Why didn't I think of that before?

Q. What 3 personal qualities are most important to you?

A. Consistency, a sense of humour and being willing to laugh at all my jokes
