- Q. What’s your greatest fear?
- A. I'm a bit of a control freak. Helplessness -- inability to help my children, husband, friends, self or pets -- freaks me out.
- Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?
- A. I would be on Shackleford Banks, an uninhabited island off the coast of North Carolina., listening to the waves, revelling in the fact that I was surrounded by wild things.

- A. Boudicca, Celtic warrior queen

- A. not hitchhiking around the world before I lost UNFAILING faith in human nature
- Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?
- A. I can see myself playing the harp. I'd have to build it a room of its own, and grow my hair down to my waist to look RIGHT playing it, but I think there's some thrilling music waiting in my fingertips.

- A. Overdoing it (any IT )

- A. Empathy and the ability to cook outstanding cheese enchiladas
- Q. If you could be any person or thing, who or what would it be?
- A. I would like to be the oldest, strongest redwood tree on earth -- what scope and wisdom!
- Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?
- A. Scout in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and Patty Bergen in SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER are two girls of great moral courage!
- Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?
- A. I want to shake people who have no empathy ; it's not that difficult to imagine yourself in another creature's -- human or animal-- skin (or exoskeleton) and imagine he/she has not had your advantages. Piece of cake, really!
- Q. What is your favorite occupation, when you’re not writing?
- A. Depends on what you mean by "occupation." Teaching high school English was my favorite job, but my favorite hobbies are riding mountain bikes, riding horses and reading, reading, reading. Oh, I enjoy cooking, too.
- Q. What’s your fantasy profession?
- A. Veterinarian for heartbroken unicorns

- A. Loyalty, sense of humor and empathy
- Q. If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your days, what would it be?
- A. Pizza!
