In addition to being a National Book Award finalist, Deb’s work has gained other distinguished recognition, including the PNBA Best Book Award, the Washington State Book Award, and School Library Journal’s Best Book award, as well as finalist citations for the California Young Reader Medal and the PEN USA Literary Award. Q. What is your motto or maxim?

A. "Knowledge is power."

Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?

A. People talking loudly in the library. I also hate it when someone picks up a book I'm in the middle of and starts reading and perusing. It's like cutting in between a happily dancing couple. I'm very clutchy about my books.

Q. With whom in history do you most identify?

A. Henry the VIII (kidding), More like a twisted combination of Casper the Friendly Ghost, Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and Virginia Woolf, minus the mental illness.

Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?

A. One of the villages of the Cinque Terre in Italy, with my feet in the sea.

Q. What’s your best quality?

A. Curiosity.
