My Life in 8 Words

Author Revealed

Q. What is your motto or maxim?

A. Fie upon this quiet life. I want work!

Q. What do you regret most?

A. It used to be not being published. I'll have to find something new to regret. Or not!

Q. If you could meet any historical character, who would it be and what would you say to him or her?

A. How can you ask a historical novelist that question and expect her to come back with just one character? I’d want to meet everyone I’ve ever put into one of my novels, from William Shakespeare and the boy apprentices to Meir of Rothenberg to King Nebuchadnezzar and the prophet Ezekiel. What would I say to them? “Did this really happen the way I imagined it?”

Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?

A. Shirley Keeldar, Charlotte Bronte's little known heroine, in her novel Shirley. Charlotte explained that her model was her sister, Emily - but that Shirley was what Emily might have become, had she had wealth and privilege.

Q. If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your days, what would it be?

A. That’s a sick, sick question.
